AIF Sparks Entrepreneurship in Winterveld

The Village Market Thuo Nala, in partnership with AIF, ignited a wave of entrepreneurial spirit in Winterveld. Through two targeted training programs, AIF empowered 24 individuals to launch three co-op businesses: Foody Goody, Senzele Events Company, and Cosmic Perfumes.

The first program, funded by KPMG, focused on providing “Give yourself a job” training to 12 mentees from The Village Market Thuo Nala’s mentorship program. Participants, drawn from nearby informal settlements and townships, were eager to learn and grow. Surprisingly, the older participants exhibited exceptional motivation and dedication throughout the training.

The curriculum covered a range of essential topics, including personal development, business theory, and practical application. While The Village Market Thuo Nala’s mentorship typically centers on agriculture, the practical sessions led to the formation of three diverse co-op businesses.

Foody Goody, a snack, sweet, and nut retailer, was established by four members with a modest R400 starting capital. Senzele Events Company, aiming to organize community modeling events, was formed by five members with a R500 investment. Cosmic Perfumes, a perfume retailer, was also launched by five members with a R500 capital.

Throughout the training, a strong emphasis was placed on financial management, including costing, pricing, record-keeping, and marketing. Despite initial challenges, all three businesses demonstrated profitability by the end of the program.

To provide real-world exposure, participants embarked on a field trip to a local farmers market. This experience offered valuable insights into the daily operations of a successful business.

Upon graduation, all participants actively engaged in entrepreneurial ventures. Remarkably, several businesses have not only thrived but have also made a positive impact on their communities by donating their harvests to local schools.

We extend our gratitude to KPMG for their invaluable support in this project. Their contribution has played a vital role in empowering individuals and fostering economic growth in South Africa’s townships and rural areas.
